Cyclones breeze into Provincetown
by Bill Podojil
Five members of the Cleveland Cyclones Cycling Club made the trek to Boston June 19 for the ninth annual Boston to Provincetown Ride. Known as gay cycling's premier event, the ride attracted cyclists from all over the United States and Canada who came to Boston to make the grueling 130mile one-day ride to the tip of Cape Cod. This year's event attracted 302 men and women, the largest crowd yet, and the largest percentage of female riders, nearly 50 percent.
The event started out on Friday night with a "carbo-load" party on the Harvard
University campus and a brief social hour. "You Betta Pedal..." was the Ru Paul-ized slogan of the ride, and was emblazoned on the T-shirts that all the participants received. Members of Boston's gay cycling club, OutRiders, escorted us out-of-town cyclists around the local hang-outs, however, it was a big day and we all zonked out quite early.
The actual ride started out at 6 am Saturday morning without a hitch. Two of the five Cleveland Cyclones were riders, this writer included. The other three worked as sag support for the ride, a very important and much appreciated perk during a long distance ride like this. Sag workers provide

the cyclists with water, food and emergency help during the course of the ride at rest stops every 30 miles. The weather was gorgeous; sunny, 92 degrees and humid. This weather can be quite dangerous, however, to cyclists who risk dehydration and heat exhaustion on such an extended route. Other than a spill that I took early on in the ride, we all made it to P-town safely and in one piece, albeit mentally and physically exhausted. The Cleveland cyclists were joined by some friends from Albany, New York, who were great cyclists and a lot of fun. There was a great sense of camaraderie that was shared by everyone.
The following days in Provincetown were well worth the ride. The city had proclaimed the weekend the "OutRiders Boston to Provincetown Ride Weekend," and was
taken over by three hundred gay cyclists all looking for a good time. On Sunday night, those who could still walk attended the awards dinner where we listened to speakers from the Gay Games and OutRiders. Many of the cyclists participating in the ride will be competing in the Gay Games next June.
All in all it was a weekend to remember. Many thanks to my fellow riders, Steve, Ric, Chris and Pete, and our sag supporters, Bob and Jim. A special personal thanks to Jeff who provided the whole group with goodies and who snapped me back into reality after I started having heat-stroke hallucinations that I was Ann-Margret, while shoving turbo-charged brownies into my face. What a ride it was!
